CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Gunfire was reported early Tuesday morning in the 700 block of Madison Ave. in the Venable neighborhood, according to the Charlottesville Police Department.

CPD reported in a 6 a.m. social media post it was on the scene of the incident. Investigators found a shot hit a gas line and the Oxford Hill Apartment Complex had been evacuated as a precaution until the fire department deemed it safe for residents to return. CPD said it believed the gunshots to be an isolated incident.

Based on preliminary information, CPD reported two individuals entered a residence in the 700 block of Madison through an upstairs balcony where gunfire was exchanged between the resident and the intruders.

The resident was not hurt, but a man arrived at the Augusta Medical Center shortly after the incident with a gunshot wound.

He is identified as 20-year old Brian Baker Jr.

“Charges of breaking and entering while armed are forthcoming,” police say. “Detectives are actively searching for the second suspect; a description will be released once more information is obtained.”

The gas line was secured and people were let back into their apartments.
